Introducing JeeGee Horse Bedding


JeeGee Horse Bedding

Made in Blandford, JeeGee Horse Bedding is a brand new addition to Aivly’s range of bedding. This recycled bedding is extremely absorbent and locks in moisture and smells in a small concentrated area which can then just be easily scooped up. Urine is absorbed into the bottom layer of bedding, locking in odour and ammonia, leaving the top layer clean, dry and comfortable. The bedding has also been though a dust extraction process and is practically dust free making it ideal for those who suffer with COPD, allergies and respiratory issues.

This bedding is biodegradable, rapidly breaking down on a muckheap in just 6-8 months, because the shreds of bedding absorb moisture so efficiently in a small, concentrated area, it will cut down on mucking out time as well as wastage.

What is the bedding made from?
JeeGee bedding is made from clean, unused, recycled egg boxes. The boxes then go through a process whereby they are shredded, dust extracted, baled up and packaged.

Is the bedding easy to work with?

It is extremely easy to work with and can be quickly and effectively spread using a fork or shavings fork. Once it gets wet, it clumps together in a small area and can quickly and easily be scooped up and put into a wheelbarrow ready for the muckheap.

Is the bedding comfortable?
The bedding is not only warm and dry, but the soft density of the bedding means that it makes a comfortable bed and is also ideal for those with Laminitis as it is soft under the hooves.

How many bales will I need to start?
You will need approximately 5 bales to lay a new bed in a standard stable. Depending on your horses specific requirements, you will need approximately 1-2 bales per week.

Can I put it on a muck heap?
Absolutely, the bedding is earth friendly and will decompose on a muck heap in just 6 – 8 months!

Does it smell?
No the bedding is virtually odourless.

Is it dusty?
The bedding has been dust extracted, so is virtually dust free.

The Importance of Getting Professionally Fitted


Professional Hat FittingsWhen it comes to safety in the saddle, design and technology has improved vastly over the years, and these days safety is a massive part of training, competing and everyday riding. While the products themselves meet the highest safety standards, if not fitted correctly, can be useless in the event of a fall or accident. It is vital that if you are thinking about investing in a new body protector, air jacket, riding hat or skull, or you just need to get your current one re-checked, you do so by a qualified stockist. A qualified stockist will have staff that have had professional training and experience in fitting safety items. Trained fitters can help you choose the correct items for your discipline of riding as well as ensuring the items are correctly fitted and can carry out the job they are designed to do.

We have sat down with the supervisor of Aivly Country Store in Hampshire to go through what is involved when it comes to safety fittings. Supervisor Harriet Bloomfield has had over 3 years’ experience of fittings is a horse owner and rider herself so understands the importance of safety in the saddle.

Deciding on equipment & measuring: Every rider and horse is unique, so have a discussion with your fitter about your specific discipline of riding, level of experience and budget, they will be able to help you choose a hat and body protector to suite your needs. You will then be professionally measured. If you are getting a hat or skull fitted, a measurement of the circumference of your head will be taken. If you are getting a body protector fitted, a back and chest measurement will be taken and a few different styles and sizes will then be fitted until the right one is found.

Fitting & warming up: A hat or skull needs to be snug but comfortable, as a hat warms up it moulds to your heads unique shape, which is why it is important you allow for 30-40 minutes for a hat fitting. For a body protector fitting, after you have been measured your fitter will reference a chart to help them select your size, you will then be asked to hop onto the in store saddle where additional checks will be carried out, this usually takes about 15-20 minutes.

Final check, second opinion & after care: Once your fitter is happy, they will then get a second qualified fitter to double check the fit and grip of the hat or skull and the rib coverage, back length and freedom of movement of the body protector. It is also advised that after 2-3 months you bring your hat back for a re-check to ensure it still fits snug and secure as it would have bedded down and moulded to your head and in some cases may need to have some adjustments. Checks and fittings are usually a complimentary service offered by tack shops.

Understanding Feedbag Information


BETA EGUS Mark & NOPS Logo These days there is a lot of information available to us when it comes to equine feeds and diet. The bag in which the feed is in, is often an excellent source of information and should have everything you need to know about the feed inside.

Feeding guidelines: Feeding guidelines are printed on the back of all feed bags. They are carefully calculated portions of amounts you should be feeding your horse or pony according to their weight and workload. Every feed is designed to target specific dietary requirements therefore every guideline will differ slightly, which is why it is always important to keep to the recommended amounts to ensure your horse is getting the correct nutrition according to their unique dietary requirements.

Nutritional analysis: This is vital information when it comes to knowing what is in feed and how to address your horse’s specific dietary requirements. But did you know most manufacturers do not list the sugar and starch levels in the nutritional analysis chart? However this information is readily available, if you do need to find out the exact levels, simply call the feed helpline number which can be found on the feed bag or speak to your local feed & tack shop.

BETA NOPS Logo: NOPS stands for Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances. If you see this logo printed on a feedbag it means that, the ingredients which were used to make the feed do not contain any prohibited substances which could lead to disqualification during competition and are of the highest standard available for competition use. 

BETA EGUS Mark: This is a relatively new feed mark and is designed to help owners identify feeds which are EGUS). The logo has been developed by BETA with the consultation of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

Aivly Scoops up Retailer of the Year Award Second Year Running


On Sunday the 22nd of January 2017 members of the equestrian industry gathered to celebrate and congratulate the winners of the 2017 BETA Business Awards, which were presented at the British Equestrian Trade Association's annual Gala Dinner, at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham.

Hampshire based tack shop Aivly Country Store scooped up two awards on the evening, and was in the final for a third. The fifteen year old tack, pet and feed store is owned and run by Sheila & Mervyn Lister, who accepted the awards at the annual gala dinner.

Aivly took the SEIB Large Retailer of the Year Award for the second year running. Over 150 companies were nominated which was then shortlisted to 5 finalists. The final decision is based on the number of nominations, mystery shop visits and incognito calls. A judge commented: “Lovely shop with good sales assistants who acknowledged us straight away despite being busy.”

Aivly was also took home the award for best Lorinery Display. Sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Loriners, the competition was introduced this year and is designed to encourage good in-store lorinery (horse bits) displays to help grow sales and increase expertise and knowledge.

The tack shop also reached the final three for the TSM Social Media Award for the third year running.

The family owned store was founded in June 2001 by husband and wife team Sheila and Mervyn Lister with just one additional staff member. The shop now employs ten full time and five part time members of staff.

BETA 2017 Business Awards


BETA Business Awards 2017Aivly Country Store are proud to announce that we have reached the national finals of the 2017 BETA Business Awards. Aivly has been short listed for both the SEIB Large Retailer of the Year Award and the TSM Social Media Award. We have also reached the finals for BETA’s Lorinery Display Competition, all of which will be presented during the BETA’s Gala Dinner, at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham on Sunday the 22nd of January 2017.

As part of the judging for the SEIB Large Retailer of the Year Award trade suppliers are asked to add their votes to those of the customers. The last stage of the judging process will see a series of mystery shoppers and incognito phone calls to the short listed candidates, which this year include, Millbry Hill, Naylors Equestrian, RB Equestrian Ltd & Tower Farm Saddleries in Rugby.

“The vast number of nominations received for this award really reflects the way in which members of the public value excellence in retailing,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams. “As a trade association, we encourage nothing but the very highest standards so that horse owners and riders can shop with confidence where they see the BETA sign. Our finalists are some of the most successful in the business and we offer them our sincere congratulations and wish them the very best of luck!”

New Aivly Grain Free Dog Food


Aivly are extremely proud to announce we will be taking on the discontinued Dear Doggy range of feeds. The high meat, gluten free and grain free line of Aivly feeds will be a new addition to our working and premium range of dog feeds. The grain free range of dry feeds is ideal for dogs who suffer from allergies as the feed is 100% free from grains, is made from all natural ingredients and contains at least a 40% meat content. Free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives the Aivly Grain Free dry food is suitable for all breeds and sizes. The all-natural dry feeds are available in four delicious flavours which include duck, chicken, salmon and lamb all of which include highly digestible sweet potatoes as the primary carbohydrate.

In addition to our new dry food range we have also introduced all natural wet trays which can be served up on their own or as a delicious topper. These wet food mixers contain only natural ingredients and at least 60% meat content which are combined with wholesome vegetables, herbs and added vitamins and minerals. As all riders know having a first aid kit is essential, as you never know when an accident or injury can occur. Being prepared when accidents occur will save you time and stress. Thankfully there are lots of great products on the market today which are designed to combat the daily struggle with pesky flies.
