Introducing JeeGee Horse Bedding
Made in Blandford, JeeGee Horse Bedding is a brand new addition to Aivly’s range of bedding. This recycled bedding is extremely absorbent and locks in moisture and smells in a small concentrated area which can then just be easily scooped up. Urine is absorbed into the bottom layer of bedding, locking in odour and ammonia, leaving the top layer clean, dry and comfortable. The bedding has also been though a dust extraction process and is practically dust free making it ideal for those who suffer with COPD, allergies and respiratory issues.
This bedding is biodegradable, rapidly breaking down on a muckheap in just 6-8 months, because the shreds of bedding absorb moisture so efficiently in a small, concentrated area, it will cut down on mucking out time as well as wastage.
What is the bedding made from?
JeeGee bedding is made from clean, unused, recycled egg boxes. The boxes then go through a process whereby they are shredded, dust extracted, baled up and packaged.
Is the bedding easy to work with?
It is extremely easy to work with and can be quickly and effectively spread using a fork or shavings fork. Once it gets wet, it clumps together in a small area and can quickly and easily be scooped up and put into a wheelbarrow ready for the muckheap.
Is the bedding comfortable?
The bedding is not only warm and dry, but the soft density of the bedding means that it makes a comfortable bed and is also ideal for those with Laminitis as it is soft under the hooves.
How many bales will I need to start?
You will need approximately 5 bales to lay a new bed in a standard stable. Depending on your horses specific requirements, you will need approximately 1-2 bales per week.
Can I put it on a muck heap?
Absolutely, the bedding is earth friendly and will decompose on a muck heap in just 6 – 8 months!
Does it smell?
No the bedding is virtually odourless.
Is it dusty?
The bedding has been dust extracted, so is virtually dust free.
The Importance of Getting Professionally Fitted
When it comes to safety in the saddle, design and technology has improved vastly over the years, and these days safety is a massive part of training, competing and everyday riding. While the products themselves meet the highest safety standards, if not fitted correctly, can be useless in the event of a fall or accident. It is vital that if you are thinking about investing in a new body protector, air jacket, riding hat or skull, or you just need to get your current one re-checked, you do so by a qualified stockist. A qualified stockist will have staff that have had professional training and experience in fitting safety items. Trained fitters can help you choose the correct items for your discipline of riding as well as ensuring the items are correctly fitted and can carry out the job they are designed to do.
We have sat down with the supervisor of Aivly Country Store in Hampshire to go through what is involved when it comes to safety fittings. Supervisor Harriet Bloomfield has had over 3 years’ experience of fittings is a horse owner and rider herself so understands the importance of safety in the saddle.
Deciding on equipment & measuring: Every rider and horse is unique, so have a discussion with your fitter about your specific discipline of riding, level of experience and budget, they will be able to help you choose a hat and body protector to suite your needs. You will then be professionally measured. If you are getting a hat or skull fitted, a measurement of the circumference of your head will be taken. If you are getting a body protector fitted, a back and chest measurement will be taken and a few different styles and sizes will then be fitted until the right one is found.
Fitting & warming up: A hat or skull needs to be snug but comfortable, as a hat warms up it moulds to your heads unique shape, which is why it is important you allow for 30-40 minutes for a hat fitting. For a body protector fitting, after you have been measured your fitter will reference a chart to help them select your size, you will then be asked to hop onto the in store saddle where additional checks will be carried out, this usually takes about 15-20 minutes.
Final check, second opinion & after care: Once your fitter is happy, they will then get a second qualified fitter to double check the fit and grip of the hat or skull and the rib coverage, back length and freedom of movement of the body protector. It is also advised that after 2-3 months you bring your hat back for a re-check to ensure it still fits snug and secure as it would have bedded down and moulded to your head and in some cases may need to have some adjustments. Checks and fittings are usually a complimentary service offered by tack shops.
Best Sellers Among our Customers: The Charles Owen Pro II Plus is a super breathable skull with a washable, removable liner. The skull carries a PAS015:2011 and VG1 safety standard.
Suitable for a multitude of disciplines, the Charles Owen Ayr8® is modern, breathable, fully customisable and carries a PAS015:2011 and VG1 safety standard.
The new generation Racesafe Provent 3.0 is a lightweight, flexible and breathable body protector which carries the highest European & BETA 2009 Level 3 protection.

Understanding Feedbag Information
These days there is a lot of information available to us when it comes to equine feeds and diet. The bag in which the feed is in, is often an excellent source of information and should have everything you need to know about the feed inside.
Feeding guidelines: Feeding guidelines are printed on the back of all feed bags. They are carefully calculated portions of amounts you should be feeding your horse or pony according to their weight and workload. Every feed is designed to target specific dietary requirements therefore every guideline will differ slightly, which is why it is always important to keep to the recommended amounts to ensure your horse is getting the correct nutrition according to their unique dietary requirements.
Nutritional analysis: This is vital information when it comes to knowing what is in feed and how to address your horse’s specific dietary requirements. But did you know most manufacturers do not list the sugar and starch levels in the nutritional analysis chart? However this information is readily available, if you do need to find out the exact levels, simply call the feed helpline number which can be found on the feed bag or speak to your local feed & tack shop.
BETA EGUS Mark: This is a relatively new feed mark and is designed to help owners identify feeds which are EGUS). The logo has been developed by BETA with the consultation of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.
For tailored help and advice on feeds and diet or questions regarding feed speak to our fully trained team in store at Aivly Country Store, Crow Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 3EA. Call us on 01425 472341 or visit our website at www.aivly.co.uk
Aivly Scoops up Retailer of the Year Award Second Year Running
On Sunday the 22nd of January 2017 members of the equestrian industry gathered to celebrate and congratulate the winners of the 2017 BETA Business Awards, which were presented at the British Equestrian Trade Association's annual Gala Dinner, at the National Motorcycle Museum, near Birmingham.
Hampshire based tack shop Aivly Country Store scooped up two awards on the evening, and was in the final for a third. The fifteen year old tack, pet and feed store is owned and run by Sheila & Mervyn Lister, who accepted the awards at the annual gala dinner.
Aivly took the SEIB Large Retailer of the Year Award for the second year running. Over 150 companies were nominated which was then shortlisted to 5 finalists. The final decision is based on the number of nominations, mystery shop visits and incognito calls. A judge commented: “Lovely shop with good sales assistants who acknowledged us straight away despite being busy.”
Aivly was also took home the award for best Lorinery Display. Sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Loriners, the competition was introduced this year and is designed to encourage good in-store lorinery (horse bits) displays to help grow sales and increase expertise and knowledge.
The tack shop also reached the final three for the TSM Social Media Award for the third year running.
The family owned store was founded in June 2001 by husband and wife team Sheila and Mervyn Lister with just one additional staff member. The shop now employs ten full time and five part time members of staff.
“This marks an incredible start to the year! We would like to thank all our customers for their support over the years and our team of staff for all their hard work” added owner Sheila Lister

As part of the judging for the SEIB Large Retailer of the Year Award trade suppliers are asked to add their votes to those of the customers. The last stage of the judging process will see a series of mystery shoppers and incognito phone calls to the short listed candidates, which this year include, Millbry Hill, Naylors Equestrian, RB Equestrian Ltd & Tower Farm Saddleries in Rugby.
“The vast number of nominations received for this award really reflects the way in which members of the public value excellence in retailing,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams. “As a trade association, we encourage nothing but the very highest standards so that horse owners and riders can shop with confidence where they see the BETA sign. Our finalists are some of the most successful in the business and we offer them our sincere congratulations and wish them the very best of luck!”

First Aid Box Essentials
As all riders know having a first aid kit is essential, as you never know when an accident or injury can occur. Being prepared when accidents occur will save you time and stress. We suggest the NAF NaturalintX Frist Aid Range. This complete range from NAF, is not only veterinary approved but the range has been specifically designed for the equestrians first aid box.
Here are some of the essentials we have handpicked from the range which we think should be in every first aid box. We will start with cleaning - The NAF NaturalintX EquiCleanse is a ready to use antibacterial wound cleaner which is proven to kill 99.99% of bacteria leaving wounds clean and sterilized. It can be applied directly onto wounds with 100% natural NAF NaturalintX Cotton Wool.
After cleaning, dress the wound with NAF NaturalintX Dressing, this natural cotton wound dressing is highly absorbent cotton which is encased in a low adherent, tubular, non-woven cover. NAF NaturalintX Poultice is another great dressing, it is ideal for lower legs. Made from 100% Poultice it can be used hot, cold or dry, dependant on the injury. Once the Poultice has been applied, cover the dressing with NAF NaturalintX Wrap the wrap will protect and support the dressing.
For minor cuts and abrasions we suggest using a wound cream or spray to make sure it does not get infected. When it comes to wound creams and sprays, a favourite is the tried and trusted purple spray, which has been a first aid box staple for years. What makes NAF NaturalintX Aloe Vera Purple Spray different is that it contains Aloe Vera extract which has numerous health benefits. NAF NaturalintX Wound Cream is also very effective, it supports the natural healing process and contains all natural ingredients such as tea tree, MSM and Aloe Vera all of which boast their own healing benefits.

Permanent & Temporary Fencing Solutions
If you are considering fencing your paddock, the first step is deciding whether you are looking to install temporary electric fencing or permanent electric fencing. Once you have done this you can then go ahead and start looking at the relevant materials.
Permanent fencing: If you are looking to install permanent fencing we would recommend making use of post and rail fencing. Post and rail fencing is strong, solid and has no sharp edges which helps to minimise possible injuries. Good installation is key and making use of wooden posts will ensure a sturdier and stronger fence which will hold up against the elements.
Temporary electric fencing: Is lightweight and a great solution if you want to make use of strip grazing or create a temporary grazing area. You will need to purchase electric fencing equipment, including an energiser which is powerful enough to power the entire fence line.
Alex’s Top Electric fencing tips:
Here are a few points to bear in mind when installing your fencing system.
1. Make sure you have a good earth.
2. Ensure there is minimal vegetation up against the fence line.
3. Make sure your energiser is powerful enough to power the whole fence line.
4. Make sure the insulators that the tape or rope are running through are the correct size.
Speak to one of our fully trained and experienced members of staff about your fencing system. Visit us at Crow Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 3EA. Shop online with us at www.aivly.co.uk. (01425 472341)
Balancing Diet, Nutrition & Gut Health
Summer is a great time to take advantage of the lush, rich grass, but often there is much supply, so it is easy for horses and ponies to over indulge – adding the calories and substance into their diet but not a spectrum of vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients. Making use of a balancer such as TopSpec Lite will provide your horse or pony with optimum levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients without adding the calories.
TopSpec Lite is a low starch, low sugar and high fibre complete balancer specially designed for good doers. Economical to feed, add it to your horse or ponies diet to provide optimum levels of vitamins, minerals and nutrients without adding the calories. The balancer helps to maintain excellent health and because it contains biotin helps improve hoof health and growth while the pure yeasts ensure a healthy hindgut.
When your horse needs it, adding pre and pro biotics to your their diet is important as they help to support the natural microbial repopulation of the gut resulting in good gut heath and normal digestive function. NAF Biotics contains probiotics and prebiotics including live yeasts to further support gut health. Biotics is particularly beneficial for horses which are in hard work, competition horses, performance horses, diarrhoea prone foals and those recovering from antibiotic therapy.

Coping with Laminitis this Spring
Spring is well underway and your horse has most likely stared to graze on the lush grass, but for some with natural grazing comes the concern of Laminitis. This crippling disease is a relatively common concern for many horse and pony owners. It is believed that grazing on the rich nutritious grass can trigger and/or onset Laminitis, so if your horse is prone to or suffers from Laminitis it is highly recommended that you restrict natural grazing.
Any horse or pony that is prone to or suffers from laminitis needs to be on a low sugar and low starch feeding programme. There are a range feeds, chaffs and balancers on the market which have been specifically designed for laminitics. Keep an eye out for the Laminitis Trust Logo, when you find this mark you can rest assured that the feed or balancer inside meets the high standards set out by the Laminitis Trust and is suitable for laminitics.
Feed: Dodson & Horrell’s High Fibre Nuts (£8.15 per 20kg) are not only Laminitis Trust approved, but these highly palatable nuts contain very low amounts of cereals so provide optimum levels of slow release energy. The low calorie feed is packed full of vitamins and minerals and can be fed wet or dry.
Chaff: Dengie Hi-Fi Lite (£11.05 per 20kg) comes highly recommended, this low calorie, high fibre maintenance feed is approved by the Laminitis Trust and is also a great choice for overweight horses. The tasty chaff is made from delicious oat straw which is blended with nutrient rich alfalfa. Low in both sugar and starch, Hi-Fi Lite also helps to maintain healthy gut function.
Balancer: Making use of a balancer is an economical way to ensure your horse or pony is getting everything they need without adding the calories. TopSpec Lite (£18.65 per 15kg) is approved by the Laminitis Trust and contains optimum levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals along with a hoof improvement supplement. You only need to feed 100g per 100kg of horse per day so is cost effective and gives you piece of mind when it comes to your horses nutrition.
Join us on Saturday the 30th of April 2016 for our Laminitis Awareness Day. Dannie from Dodson & Horrell will be here to offer expert advice. Dannie will have a stand in store from 10am – 4pm on the day and will be on hand to answer all your questions and concerns as well as offering feed and supplement solutions for those suffering from or prone to Laminitis. Is your Riding Hat up to Standard?
Over the last year you would have heard about the revision of riding hat standards. Hat standards typically get revised every 5 years and most revisions do not result in significant changes, however the last revision did, and as a consequence it was announced that they were doing away with the BSEN 1384 certification and replacing it with PAS 015, which came into effect for most organisations on the 1st of January 2016. The PAS 015 certification is now the standard recognised and accepted by all major organisations including British Dressage, British Showjumping, British Eventing, The British Horse Society, Pony Club, Riding for the Disabled and the British Riding Club. When purchasing a new hat be sure to look out for the PAS 015 certification mark which is found on the inside of the hat or skull, if you are getting fitted by a reputable retailer they will be able to advise you. We have selected two of our top hat choices, whether you are looking to splash out on a new hat or are on a budget.
AYR8: The Charles Owen AYR8 (Prices starting from £191.95) is a truly stylish piece of headwear. As worn by Charlotte Dujardin the hat is packed full of features and can be fully customised to your taste. The riding hat is kitemarked to PAS015 and certified by SEI to ASTM F1163 so offers unparalleled safety. Packed with technical features including vent holes located in the front and rear, Thermoregulation paint in the centre and GRpx® harness technology ensuring a superb fit.
X-Air Plus: The Champion X-Air Plus (£68.50) is another great option that will not break the bank. Made in Britain, the X-Air Plus certified to PAS 015 and boasts a range of functional features including a ventilation system, a 4 point padded harness and an ultra-lightweight ABS injection mounded shell.

Get Your Paddock Ready for Summer Grazing with Suregrow
Although the winter just gone was a relatively mild one, making use of a fertilizer to give your paddock that extra nutrient boost, will give it the start it needs for a summer of grazing. Suregrow fertilizer is a great choice and is specially designed to be used on horse paddocks.
Suregrow is an excellent choice for a number of reasons, not only does it stimulate root development, resulting in a denser sward and less weed growth but there is no need to relocate your horse whist spreading. You only need to spread 4 bags per acre for maximum results, making this a cost effective choice. Suregrow fertilizer provides slower release nutrients resulting in a more sustained grass growth over a longer period of time. This specially formulated fertilizer will not scorch or burn grass and will improve palatability and promote a greener field for delicious, natural grazing all summer long.
Take advantage of the Suregrow Early Bird offer at Aivly! Get a bag of Suregrow for just £11.95. While stocks last.

Aivly wins Large Tack Shop of the Year
We are incredibly proud to announce that we won the BETA SEIB Retailer of the Year 2016 – Large Tack Shop. The BETA Business awards took place on Sunday the 24th of January 2016 at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. Tack shops from around the country where nominated so it is a privilege just to reach the finals. The news that we had reached the finals came late December and we were overjoyed, the awards ceremony in Birmingham was attended by owners Mervyn & Sheila Lister.
How the process works: Any tack shop within the UK can be nominated, nominations are made by customers. Once the nominations are closed, tack shops are then requested to complete a company profile. BETA then contacts the finalists, all of which are invited to the gala dinner and awards ceremony in Birmingham. This year the finalists in the SEIB Large Retailer of the Year included CC Aberystwyth, Novite Farm & Country, Speedgate Enterprises and TCS Country Supplies. Before the awards ceremony, each of the finalists gets visited by a secret shopper who judges a number of areas including customer service, product range, shop layout and telephone manner. Along with the secret shopper, trade suppliers also vote and a winner is then chosen. The winning tack shop is announced and presented their trophy during the awards ceremony at the gala dinner in Birmingham.
It has been an amazing 6 months for Aivly, not only has this family run business scooped up the BETA award for the SEIB Retailer of the Year 2016 – Large Tack Shop, Aivly also reached the finals for the BETA TSM Social Media 2016 Award and won the Over the Counter Country Store of the Year 2015 which was presented at the Hotel Café Royal in London in November.
We would like to say a massive thank you to all our customers for their nominations and taking the time to complete the nomination forms and most importantly supporting us over the last 13 years. We would also like to thank our incredible team of staff for all their hard work.

High Fibre & All Natural Forage
With winter creeping up slowly, condition or a lack of, is a common concern among horse owners. With the cold weather comes the need to rug your horse more frequently and for longer, so a decrease in condition can often be missed. Make sure when changing rugs you keep an eye on your horses condition.
To ensure your horses condition stays at peak levels throughout the colder months, ensure you feed high quality, nutritious forage throughout the winter months to compensate for the nutritious grass which is usually the main source of forage during the summertime. Fosse Way Haylage and the brand new, New Forest Haylage Hi Performer are two great, all natural haylage options.
Fosse Way Haylage (£5.40 for 20kg) is produced in Somerset. This tasty haylage is made up of a rye grass and timothy grass mix and is low in sugar, and rich in vitamins, nutrients and fibre. Fosse Way is dust free and is not only suitable for horses and ponies but is ideal for all types of livestock.
New Forest Haylage Hi Performer (£5.95 for 20kg) is a brand new haylage from the producers of the tried and trusted Original New Forest Haylage. New Forest Haylage Hi Performer is a higher energy haylage which is grown and produced in the New Forest. This highly palatable haylage is made up of 7 types of grasses, which are cut in the very late spring and then left to dry in the south coast sunshine. Rich in vitamins and minerals it is also high in fibre and dust free.
To take advantage of our FREE local feed and bedding delivery service call us on 01425 472341. For help and advice on feeds and haylage, speak to one of our fully trained and experienced staff members. Aivly Country Store, Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 3EA (01425 472341)

What you need to know about Encysted Red Worm
Chances are, if you own a horse or pony you have heard of Encysted Red Worm. It is around this time of year that you need to start thinking about treatment for this common parasite. In this article we are going to discuss what Encysted Red Worm is, what symptoms to look for and how to go about treatment.
What are Encysted Red Worms? Cyathostomins are also known as small redworms, they are the most common internal equine parasites. At the encysted stage of the lifecycle, the larvae penetrate the gut wall where they hibernate. This phase usually occurs in the late Autumn or early winter and it is at this time you need to administer treatment.
Life cycle: Eggs are passed into the faeces, these eggs are then present on the pasture and within roughly two weeks hatch into larvae. These hatchlings are then ingested and penetrate the wall of the gut where they encyst, develop and if left untreated will then emerge in large numbers in the early Spring, if this does happen it can be fatal so it is best to seek treatment in the beginning of the winter ensuring the parasite lifecycle is ended before they emerge and start the cycle all over again.
Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment: At the encysted stage of the cycle, symptoms are minimal, it is advised that at this time of year you go and speak to a trained and qualified wormer (also known as a SQP), they will be able to offer help, expertise and advise as well as prescribe the correct medicine and dosage.
Speak to one of our trained and qualified SQP’s in store at Aivly, they will be able to offer sound advice and treatments. Visit us at Crow Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 3EA. Shop online with us at www.aivly.co.uk. (01425 472341)

Come join us along with Philippa, our TopSpec representative on Sunday the 25th of October for another helpful & informative nutrition day. Phillipa will be joining us from 10am – 4pm to discuss your horse’s dietary and nutrition needs, so bring along any questions, queries and concerns you may have. Save Time & Money with Feed Balancers
As all horse owners know your time is precious, there is often very little spare time in the day especially when trying to juggle work, family and your equine responsibilities. Your horse’s nutrition is important and knowing that your horse or pony is getting everything they need in their diet gives you one less thing to worry about. A quick, easy and cost effective way to do this is with the use of balancers. Balancers are a highly concentrated mix of vitamins and minerals which is fed in small amounts alongside forage and ensures your horse is getting everything it needs without overfeeding.
A great general balancer is TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer (£36.25 for 20kg) – economical to feed your horse only needs 100g per 100kg of horse per day. This highly palatable feed balancer can be added to the chaff of your choice and will provide your horse with optimum amounts of vitamins and minerals, without the added calories. TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer is low in sugar, starch and is also free from cereal grains. These non-heating pellets contain antioxidants, amino-acids and MSM to help maintain joint health, the high quality protein ensures optimum muscle development and muscle function, while the added biotin is scientifically proven to improve hoof quality.
The use of a balancer will not only save you time and money but also give you peace of mind too. TopSpec offers a range of balancers - if you have any questions regarding feed balancers and which balancer to use speak to one of our fully trained staff members.

The Benefits of using Stable Matting
Winter is well and truly on its way, and with it comes the need to stable more often and for longer periods. Making use of stable matting will save you time, money and also boasts a number of benefits for your horse. Investing in rubber matting is beneficial and in the long run will save you a heap of time, stress and money. Rubber Matting is sold in sheets which are 6ft x 4 ft x 17mm and cost £39.95 per sheet. Below are some of the pros both you and your horse will benefit from with the use of stable matting.
Making use of stable matting will not only save you time but can also improve your horse’s health. Not only do they offer comfort and cushioning but underfoot insulation resulting in a warmer and more comfortable bed. The use of stable matting is beneficial for feet, hooves and legs as it offers additional cushioning and decreased pressure when standing which is particularly useful if your horse is a laminitic or suffers with arthritis.
Stable matting is also economical – saving you. Once the matting is laid you will only need to use roughly 20% of the bedding you would have needed prior to having stable matting as you only need enough to cover the matting and soak up the waste, removing and replacing the saturated areas when needed. Stable matting also allows urine to drain away easier, resulting in reduced odours. Stable matting is also relatively low maintenance, it only needs to be thoroughly cleaned every couple of months, resulting in less mucking out, therefore saving you time and energy.

Colic in Horses Causes and Symptoms
Colic is a term used to describe a symptom of abdominal pain, which in horses is usually caused by problems in the gastrointestinal tract. It is a condition that concerns many horse owners and can range from mild to severe in nature. There are a number of factors that may upset the balance of the gastro-intestinal tract some of which include abrupt changes to feed, stress, high grain diets, acorn ingestion, lack of water, spoilt feed, sand ingestion and parasite infestation.
Symptoms of colic include pawing, rolling, bloating, loss of interest in food and water, excessive sweating, restlessness, rapid breathing, frequent urination, flack watching, anxiety and depression. If you suspect colic it is important to see your vet, they will be able to determine the severity, type and cause of colic and diagnose and prescribe medicines accordingly.
As with all conditions prevention is better than cure. To keep the possibility of colic to a minimum we suggest always keeping up to date with your worming program, making any changes to feed gradual, always ensuring that there is plenty of drinking water and perhaps also introducing a supplement into your horses’ diet which is designed to promote and maintain gut health. NAF in the Pink Powder (£22.95 for 700g) is a concentrated feed balancer which can be fed daily, it contains live yeasts as well as probiotics and is designed to optimize gut function, the natural digestive process and promote general vitality. If you suspect sudden gut imbalance NAF Biotics (£15.95 for 300g) is a great short course. NAF Biotics is an all-natural combination of pre and probiotics which help to support gut health, digestive function and is ideal for horses recovering from antibiotics, hardworking horses and diarrhoea prone foals – all whom can be susceptible to microbial upset and consequently digestive imbalance.

Benefits of Using Straw Bedding For Your Horse
If you own horses you know choosing or changing bedding is not a straightforward decision, as with most things equine it is dependent on a number of factors including storage, disposal, budget, transport and the specific requirements of your horse. There are a number of types of bedding, but the two most popular choices are straw type bedding or wood shavings. Wood shavings are a great choice, they are easy to work with, can be easily stored and are usually dust extracted so are excellent for horses who suffer with respiratory issues.
Easy Pack Chopped Miscanthus (£6.90 for 20kg bale). Made from elephant grass, it is a dense, finely chopped straw type bedding which is all natural, chemical free and dust extracted making it a great choice for those with respiratory issues. Chopped Miscanthus is easy to work with and because it is 100% natural it is fully biodegradable, decomposing on a muck heap in just 2 – 3 months or it can just be spread directly onto grass acting as a rich and all-natural fertilizer.
Bliss Basic Bedding (£7.05 for 20kg bale) is made from chopped and dust extracted rape straw so is again a great option for those that suffer from or are prone to respiratory issues. The premium straw is also treated with Trus-STEED Stable Guard disinfectant which will help to keep your stable fresh. Environmentally friendly Bliss Basic is packed in recyclable bags and the bedding will biodegrade on a muckheap in around 6 months. Bliss Eucalyptus (£7.30 for 20kg bale) is also made from the same dust extracted rape straw but it contains added eucalyptus essential oils. Eucalyptus oil acts as a mild decongestant so it helps those with respiratory issues or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) better known as Heaves. Eucalyptus oil also acts as a natural antiseptic so together with the Trus-STEED Stable Guard disinfectant will help to keep your stable clean and fresh. Bliss Eucalyptus is packaged in fully biodegradable bags and will biodegrade on a muckheap in roughly 6 months.

Topping Up Nutrition with Balancers
During the Summer months most of us are lucky enough to cut down on the cost of feeds by natural grazing, however the quality and quantity of grazing needs to be monitored, especially if your horse or pony is prone to weight gain. Reducing the amount of grazing will reduce intake of calories but it also reduces the amount of essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients a healthy horse needs.
This is where feed balancers come in, TopSpec manufacture a range of balancers to suit every horse, a popular choice with our customers is TopSpec Lite Feed Balancer. This cereal grain free balancer is designed for good doers, it is high in fibre, low in calories, low in sugar, non-heating and is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals ensuring your horse or pony gets all the nutrients he needs alongside a calorie controlled diet.
Economical to feed and now half price at Aivly, a 15kg bag (now £9.40 was £18.75) will last a 500kg horse 30 days. TopSpec Lite Feed Balancer also contains a hoof supplement, which is beneficial for Laminitics. Take advantage of our free delivery service which is available to customers living within a 10 mile radius of our Ringwood based shop, ordering a minimum of 10 bags of feed or bedding.

Big Welcome To The Team - 11 February 2014
Aivly Country Store in Ringwood is proud to welcome three new faces to the award-winning store.
Crowned 2013 BETA Large Retailer of the Year in recognition of its commitment to quality and service for suppliers and consumers alike, Aivly has appointed staff to complement the existing team. Joining the shop floor advisory staff are Sammy Flower and Katie Fletcher.
Both riders in their younger years, the opportunity to move to the area has also reignited their passion for all things equestrian.
Katie says, “Even though I’ve owned horses it has surprised me how different it is to cater for someone else’s needs.”
And for Sammy it is the working environment she’s enjoying most.
Sammy explains, “I went to New Zealand to work on a dairy farm and to have a job where you continually see items you’d dream of owning and don’t get covered in cow manure is brilliant!”
Sammy and Katie are being supported with staff training and they and the remaining sales team can also now refer to the latest member of staff, Claudia Newman.
Claudia says, “I’m an organiser and like to work to try to make people’s working environment more pleasurable.”
Among Claudia’ roles will be to liaise with customers and suppliers with any returns as Claudia explains, “Manufacturers are increasingly encouraging a ‘make do and mend’ policy rather than replacing damaged items and so it will be my role to manage customer expectations and work to getting them the best outcome they can.”
With Aivly offering leading brands for quality and value, faulty items are few and far between while regular riders really do put their products through their paces.
Claudia says, “I own a horse and two dogs so I know what we expect from products and equally we are seeing suppliers rebranding their country style products to increase awareness of items better suited to say, the festival scene as opposed to equestrian fields.”

Q&A with Mary King - 30 November 2013
Mary King, six-time Olympic three-day-event rider visited Aivly Country Store during our open day on 30th November and answered your questions. Here are her responses;
Q. How high are the Olympic jumps?
A. Hmm. I’m not sure of the actual dimensions but the Olympics is actually not the biggest we ever do because other nationalities such as Russia and Poland don’t have access to top level events like Badminton and Burghley and so the fences are slightly smaller so that they can also compete.
Q. I have started competing in British Eventing at 80 level and I want to do BE90 but my horse struggles in the dressage and is resistant to go on the bit so I was trying draw reins but wondered if you had any tips?
A. Firstly it is important to find out why your horse finds it difficult - is there a pain reason or lack of schooling. Then I’d make sure the horse can flex his head without a rider on. I would lunge him with elastic side reins always making sure he has a slightly shorter inside rein to aid the bend. When ridden I’d start asking the horse when standing still and reward him when he has a soft jaw and is relaxed at the poll. If he resists again I’d correct with a firm rein and repeat with a reward to get him to understand what you want. It is more difficult for a horse to be on the bit at walk so I’d trot straight way and repeat correcting and rewarding. I’d be wary of using draw reins because if the horse is not working from behind he can have a false head carriage but I do use draw reins for a horse that flicks its head into canter or to correct minor faults.
Q. How will I know when it is the right time to move a horse up a level in competition?
A. If you feel confident and the horse is moving freely and smoothly then I would move up to make sure the horse is jumping happily at home in training and in pure show jumping before moving up in the competition.
Q. Which was your favourite Olympics and why?
A. There has been no one in particular. My first Olympics was amazing because I was riding on a team with my heroes and I still had so much to learn from them. Sydney was amazing, Beijing was fascinating because we had to cope with high heat and humidity but we missed out by not being with the rest of the Olympic disciplines. I actually didn’t think London would feel like an Olympics being just a short journey along the motorway but the crowd was amazing and the Mexican wave of a roar as I rode around the cross-country will be a lasting memory. It was so deafening that I couldn’t hear my stopwatch as it bleeped and being of a certain age I couldn’t see the watch either so I was a tiny bit over the time but in the end it didn’t matter to the result.

Protect your horse from poisonous acorns with Aivly - 01 October 2013
Falling acorns are tempting forage for horses but with it comes a fatal risk.
Acorns contain a poison that builds up in the horse over time and repeated risk or a huge gorging session can cause colic and even death.
You can help protect your horse by erecting fencing - permanent or portable - using wire or electric fencing.
All supplies are available at Aivly Country Store and the helpful, experienced staff can also offer advice as needed. We also stock a selection of electric fencing supplies online which can be viewed here.
And if fencing off oak trees leaves your horse without shelter from the still scorching sun and pesky flies, why not check out the field shelters available at Aivly Country Store with mobile shelters that are moved to suit the season.
Help your horse be Fit and Strong! - 10 September 2013
Aivly Country Store’s comprehensive range of supplements can be mind-blowing but the experienced in-store staff are on hand to help and the website offers a full breakdown of product information as well as an overview.
Searching for specific bone supplements Global Herbs Strongbone Supplement is a herbal formulation to encourage skeletal development in young horses and help keep joints strong in older equines. For an example of a muscle-function supplement, Equine America’s Tye-Guard contains vitamin E and Selenium to promote healthy muscle function and reduce lactic-acid levels.
As advisors will tell you, ensuring the liver is functioning optimally will also improve muscle function by efficiently removing the bi-products of high-intensity exercise such as lactic acid. Also ensuring sufficient protein to build muscle is in the concentrate diet, advisors may also point you in the direction of a protein-rich feed balancer such as Blue Chip Dynamic which includes supplements for joint health too.
Welcome to the team! - 15 August 2013
Aivly Country Store in Ringwood welcomes two new members of staff to the team whom we hope you’ll find familiar friendly faces.
Rebecca (Becky) Foggin from Poulner was familiar with Aivly Country Store having worked at the site over 10 years ago with previous occupants, Framptons – a pet and garden centre. A keen equestrian, Becky then pursued a career at the British Racing School in Newmarket but having hung up those boots, a position at Aivly Country Store became the perfect position. Becky says, “It’s really nice to bump in to old customers from my Framptons’ days in the pet section.
Working across the shop floor from pet to poultry and equestrian to country apparel, Becky has added body-protector fitting qualifications to her CV and has started her hat-fitting training since joining Aivly.
She says, “Staff development at Aivly is really consistent and with professional training from equestrian brands such as Ariat, NAF, Baileys, Top Spec and dog brands from Barking Heads to Burns nutrition, I’m learning a huge amount.”
Horse-owner, Rachel Elliott joins Aivly from a position as a store director for clothing retailer, Beales.
She explains, “I wanted to combine my equestrian and retailing experiences to really help customers and, since Aivly has so many regular shoppers, it’s great to be able to get their feedback first hand from recommended products be they bits to supplements.”
Living on a dairy farm in Shroton, Rachel says, “Has its uses – particularly when helping our agricultural clients!” while she also has a particular interest in equine nutrition. But Rachel admits her attention is regularly swayed by the equestrian clothing section and says, “There are so many items I dream of buying for myself with the Ariat Bromont boots in Wax Chocolate top of my list at the moment!”
Buy all-round vitamin supplements at Aivly
Equimins Tip Top Supplement Powder and the herb-based Natraliving NatraGlow Daily or Global Herbs Globalvite.
Another alternative is the Baileys Feed Block, which is available in-store. Where concentrate feed is not provided at all, the weather resilient feed block can be placed in the field and offers vitamins, minerals and trace elements.
Horse owners may also turn to NAF Slimline - a unique formulation that not only provides vitamins and minerals but also encourages a healthy metabolism and hence weight loss. Visit Aivly Country Store, Ringwood, BH24 3EA, order at www.aivly.com or via tel 01425 472341.
Captain Jack Sparrow amazes crowds at Aivly Country Store
Pirates of the Caribbean star, Captain Jack Sparrow, provided unusual entertainment and merriment at the celebration of Aivly Country Store’s newly re-designed clothing showroom.
Local resident Liz Wright, who admits to popping in to the store on a weekly, if not daily basis, said, “The whole shop is lovely but even better when there’s a handsome pirate wandering about”, admitting, “I’m always in here as Aivly has everything I’m after but I will be hugely disappointed if Captain Jack Sparrow returns to his ship!”
The Ringwood store won the coveted national title of British Equestrian Trade Association Large Retailer of the Year award earlier this year for its customer service and collaboration with suppliers and the new showroom is an indication that Aivly is far from resting on its laurels.
Additional changing facilities have been provided and the layout including wooden walkway and carpet resembles more of a John Lewis experience to a traditional tack shop.
Brands are given separate areas, aiding the shopper to find stylish riding and country clothing from the likes of Dublin to Dubarry, HV Polo to Pikeur.
This also means further redesign to other areas with a beautifully laid-out bitting, bridle and leatherwork showroom; yard, paddock and pet area.
Competition clothing and footwear continues on a second floor and one to avail herself of the 10% saving offered on the night was Ehsani Rondiani, who said, “I’m buying this jacket because it was handpicked by Jack Sparrow”, adding, “I was a bit concerned as he stayed to watch me try on several styles and colours but he said he liked this one the best so I’ll expect to win on every outing now!”
Aivly is often a meeting point for those keen on country pursuits with a neighbouring coffee shop and friends Arlene Charlwood and Fi Govier found themselves buying handfuls of items. Arlene says, “It was worth coming for the generous goodie bag and while I was trying to sneak in and say I didn’t buy anything, you’ve caught me!”
Arlene’s daughter Chloe and Fi’s daughter Lauren were also among the visitors with Fi admitting, “Jack Sparrow was certainly very funny and very flirty and has caused quite a few blushes but mostly among the mothers!”
Commenting on the evening itself, Captain Jack Sparrow said, “My ship seems to be sailing and I think its time for some more rum”, while Aivly staff coped well with providing refreshment and nibbles to the more than 130 guests who attended the event. Aivly’s Mervyn Lister said, “We thought it would be a fun way to celebrate the new showroom – for a long time it’s been a dream of mine to have the look and feel that we now have and it’s great that people seem to appreciate it and we look forward to welcoming more through our doors keen to check it out.”
If you’ve not yet visited Aivly Country Store and perhaps have reservations about shopping for country wear in a traditional tack shop, why not pay the award-winning Aivly Country Store a visit and see if it exceeds your expectations too.

Aivly hosts Safety evening for Pony Clubs
9th April 2012
Home truths to helpful tips were shared at an ‘Equipment Safety’ rally held for local pony clubs at Ringwood’s Aivly Country Store.
Forty children from New Forest Hunts, Hursley and Poole & District Pony Clubs were kept captivated by a demonstration led by industry experts.
Zara McCaughey of Charles Owen riding hats guided the riders as to the lifespan to expect from their hat, how to prolong longevity through care, and showed the cross-section of a hat seemingly in good condition but internally damaged after a fall, demonstrated the need to replace a hat after a fall.
Raised eyebrows to the ‘wobble’ test were among the hat-fitting tips with riders able to have their existing hats checked with Aivly generously offering 10% off Charles Owen hats bought on the day.
Holders of the prestigious BETA Retailer of the Year Award, Aivly is always seeking to engage with both customers and suppliers and Zara said, “The evening was a brilliant way for Charles Owen to be able to connect to riders and to understand their concerns and you can always be sure of a good reception, care and attention, at Aivly.”
Trying on a new hat, 15 year-old Flora Gibbs admitted, “I was told off by my riding instructor for still wearing the hat I had when I was eight years old and now I realise I really do need a new one.”
Aivly’s own staff are also qualified hat and body protector fitters with Charlene Keightley on hand to check existing fit and help with purchases with the store able to fit body protectors in the saddle, checking for clearance at the back of the saddle.
With air jackets increasing in popularity, Rachael Faulkner of Hit Air, explained how air jackets work with Georgina Killengray enthusiastically volunteering to be ‘blown up’ - her expression as the CO2 canister was set off being regarded as a ‘best moment’ of the evening by many! Georgina Killengray said, “It was quite a shock and although people do ride in air jackets without their body protectors underneath, I was glad I had mine on.”
Rachel Bruce of Surepoint Safety & Law Ltd also led the group to assess their tack and equipment for safety, the fitting of stirrup irons and how to care for their tack for longevity. Eagle-eyed Pony Club members found rotten stitching, torn leather, missing buckles, frayed elastic, cracking leather, stretched leather, worn out synthetic tack and chewed bits. As well as understanding the need for tack to be appropriately stored and in good condition for a rider’s own safety, Rachel also impressed how tack in poor condition could harm their horse or pony.
Flora Gibbs added, “All the talk was really interesting and it did make me think differently about safety.”
In addition to its hat and body protector-fitting service, Aivly sells quality equipment, offers tack repair and stocks a range of conditioning products to enhance the lifespan of one’s tack. Instigator of the rally, Paula Killengray of New Forest Hunts Pony Club said, “Aivly offers a really comprehensive service for its customers and were very generous hosts for the evening”, said Paula Killengray of New Forest Hunts Pony Club and instigator of the rally, adding, “I know the parents also appreciated being able to wander through the spacious store without ‘pester power’ and to enjoy a coffee at the neighbouring coffee shop while their children were educated and entertained.”
The children attending will each receive an ‘Equipment Safety’ achievement badge from their local Pony Club.
Concluding the evening, Rachel Bruce said, “Equestrianism is not without risk but by encouraging awareness of equipment safety not only are we able to prevent injury to horse or rider, we are also able to improve the reputation of our exciting sport and I was really impressed by the children’s understanding and I think everyone learnt something during the evening.”

Aivly Country Store crowned best in Britain - 17 February 2013
Aivly Country Store, in Ringwood, on the Hampshire/Dorset border has scooped the most prestigious national award for equestrian retailers.
With over 2000 tack shops initially nominated by their customers, and referenced by suppliers, Aivly’s customer service, expertise and facilities were then secretly assessed by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA).
Judged to be the best in the business, Aivly was announced as the SEIB (Large) Retailer of the Year Award during the BETA Gala Dinner at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham, on Sunday, 17 February.
“It was such a wonderful surprise”, says Sheila Lister of Aivly Country Store, adding, “Aivly always endeavours to offer a personal yet professional service – and were thrilled to have been nominated for the fourth time this year.
“To win has really inspired us and we’re looking at further ways to improve - we’ve got a standard to set - and would like to thank everybody who voted for us and our staff for helping Aivly achieve this award.”
Founded in 2002, Aivly has grown to become an established country store including agricultural and pet feed, bedding and supplies, country gifts and clothing, and equestrian equipment specialists.
And while Aivly has a thriving website, it is visiting the well-presented store and feed barn that more closely resembles Selfridges than a Country Store that gives shoppers confidence - along with the excellent customer care.
“BETA encourages the highest standards in equestrian retailing, enabling horse owners and riders to shop with confidence and Aivly should be congratulated for being voted the best in Britain”, said BETA executive director Claire Williams.

Indeed this was the fourth time for Aivly Country Store, founded just 10 years ago, to be be nominated for the award, with customers’ describing Aivly as an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of tempting products; departments including country clothing to farm animal feeds and fencing, pet and poultry supplies, gardening tools and specialist equestrian equipment.

Mary King at Aivly Open Day - 19 November 2011
Mary King made a very special guest appearance at the annual Aivly Tack Shop and Country Store Open Day, Ringwood, Hampshire on Saturday 19th November.
A veteran of five Olympics Mary, who celebrated her 50th birthday this year, has just completed possibly her most successful season to date – including scooping the $150,000 (approx £95,000) HSBC FEI Classics.
Always smiling and well aware of the highs and lows eventing brings, Mary has broken her neck, lost horses in competition, and now must cope with spectator nerves too as her daughter, Emily, 15, reaches international ranks - Emily riding for the British squad at the Junior European Championships this year.
Travelling from her Devon home, Mary entertained the approximate 250-strong crowd at Aivly Tack Shop’s spacious store with anecdotes from her past and explaining just how she worked her way from groveling to ride other people’s ponies to becoming a gold medallist.
At a pivotal point in her early career, Mary was offered a significant sum for her home-produced Diver’s Rock but declined saying, “I decided I’d rather be famous than rich!”
Mary answered questions from Aivly’s audience and said, “It was great to have such an enthusiastic crowd of horse lovers”; queues extending across the showroom.
Sam Whiteford, representing Mary’s sponsor, Ariat Clothing & Footwear, joked, “We might have to bring security next time”, and, Sheila Lister, owner of Aivly Tack Shop & Country Store remarked, “Mary obviously has got a very big fan club and it was great to be able to give something back to our customers.”
Indeed, Aivly offered a free hog roast and there were numerous experts on hand to offer advice, samples, discounts and giveaways.
Mary concluded the day, announcing the competition winners’ names for various prize draws valued at several hundred pounds.
